All Souls
by May Sarton

Did someone say that there would be an end,
An end, Oh, an end, to love and mourning?
Such voices speak when sleep and waking blend.
The cold bleak voices of the early morning
When all the birds are dumb in dark November-
Rember and forget, forget, remember.

After the false night, warm true voices, wake!
Voice of the dead that touches the cold living.
Throughthe pale sunlight once more gravely speak.
Tell me again, while the last leaves are falling:
"Dear child, what has been once so interwoven
Cannot be raveled, nor the gift ungiven."

Now the dead move through all of us still glowing,
Mother and child, lover and lover mated,
Are wound and bound together and enflowing
What has been plaited cannot be unplaited-
Only the strands grow richer with each loss
And memory makes kings and queens of us.

Dark into light, light into darkness, spin.
When all the birds have flown into some real haven,
We who find shelter in the warmth within,
Listen, and fell new-cherisned, new-forgiven,
As the lost human voices speak through us and blend
Our complex love, our morning without end.

In Remembrance of those loved ones
so tragically lost on September 11, 2001

The Warrior's Prayer
by Paul Laurence Dunbar

Long since, in sore distress, I heard one pray,
"Lord, who prevailist with resistless might,
Ever from war and strife keep me away,
My battles fight!"

I know not if I play the Pahrisee,
And if my brother after all be right;
But mine shall be the warrior's plea to thee-
Strength for the fight.

I do not ask that thou shalt front the fray,
And frive the warring foreman from my sight;
I only ask, O Lord, by night, by day,
Strength for the fight!

When foes upon me press, let me not quail
Nor think to turn me into a coward flight.
I only ask, to make mine arms prevail,
Strength for the fight!

Still let mine eyes look ever on the foe,
Still let mine armor case me strong and bright;
And grant me, as I deal each righteous blow,
Strength for the fight!
